August 5, 2009 State officials ask for patience over voter checks

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — State elections officials are asking for patience
as they respond to inquiries from voters who received letters to
verify their personal information.

The Government Accountability Board has received a heavy volume of
calls and e-mails in response to letters sent to 85,000 voters who
registered between January 2006 and August 2008.
The voters were asked to call the board because part of their voter
information does not match their driver’s license or state
identification card. The goal is to improve the accuracy of the state
voter database.

Some callers have been met with busy signals or messages that a voice
mailbox is full.

Board officials say voters who have trouble getting through do not
need to worry about losing their eligibility.
